After being the first to install LED lighting in tunnels and at motorway ramps, Cree Europe continues to raise the bar in the innovation stakes, challenging convention and engineering real change. The challenge was to find a way of guaranteeing the high levels of illumination needed at the entrance and exits to motorway tunnels. The answer was to use new-generation, high-performance, high-efficiency LED chips. The Cree Europe LED products installed raised entrance luminance levels to 68 cd/m2. A power-line communication system was also incorporated to provide light control and allow the LEDs to run on currents of up to 700 mA. The fixtures are served by dimmable electronic drivers linked to a controller that manages electronic control system status and operation, adjusting the supply current accordingly, depending on the programme selected.
The areas targeted in this project were the permanent lighting and entrance into the Monte Veilino Tunnel on the A12 motorway. 55 THE EDGE Tunnel fixtures of 40-120 LED were installed at varying intervals with asymmetric street optic type TM. A power line communication system was also incorporated to provide light control and enable the LEDs to run on currents of up to 700 mA.
