Montalto Uffugo, Italy
Montalto Uffugo is a small town in the province of Cosenza in southern Italy. Nestled in the hills of the Apennine Mountains, the territory has rich heritage of cultural and natural attractions. While the residents take great pride in their traditions, they also believe in looking forward by creating new possibilities of aggregation for the community. With this in mind, when ASD Soccer Montalto (Montalto association for amateur sports) began designing a new soccer field for their regional amateur and youth soccer teams, they were ready to push the limits on the usual equipment of amateur sport fields in the region. The new soccer field was designed to offer a go-to landmark for the entire soccer sector in Montalto and the surrounding region, offering a sports facility open for youth soccer teams and schools but more importantly to the teams of the amateur soccer league.
In less than two months the ASD Soccer Montalto realized the regular size soccer field, covered with last generation synthetic grass, and illuminated with a state-of-the-art LED lighting system from Cree that consumes up to 4 times less energy than the proposed equivalent lighting of the traditional type. In fact, the facility is the first and only one in South Italy to be equipped with LED lighting, another reason of great satisfaction for ASD Soccer Montalto aside from the fact to have built a sport facility that is unique in the area.
The project initially included a traditional lighting system with 18 discharge lamps, consuming 2000W each. After presenting an alternative lighting design including Cree Edge™ High Output fixtures, the decision to turn to Cree® LED Technology was an easy one. The existing lighting system consumes 74% less energy than the initially proposed solution and will save the association up to 93% of maintenance expenses. In environmental terms, the installation will save 116 tons of CO2 throughout the fixture’s lifetime, all while lighting up sports events with beautiful uniform light.
